The days of a shop being just a shop have passed. Today it’s all about creating a destination; a place people want to visit and experience. One such space is the recently refurbished flagship store of iconic menswear outlet Barkers, aptly located at Number 1 High Street in one the city’s most beautiful heritage buildings.
As the largest of any of the Barkers retails spaces, High Street is no ordinary shop, offering made-to-measure suiting, an espresso bar (Burrs & Grind) and the Barkers Groom Room; a barber shop run by haircutting icon Matt Swan at the mezzanine level of the space. The entire destination has been outfitted in a consistently timeless elegance in keeping with the heritage of the building as well as the brand’s forty plus years in business, while the Groom Room gives a nod to the classic mid-century barber shop but with a modern twist.
I stopped by the Groom Room to try out their services; I opted for the Martini, an express cut and style, perfect for the man on the run at about 20 minutes. Other options including cut throat shaves, hot towel facial steams, and beard trims are available. The Groom Room is available at Barkers flagship store in Auckland and also at their Lampton Quay store in Wellington. Prices range from $15-$75 and you can book online.

My Top Tips for a Polished Look:
Know your hair – When selecting a new style, be realistic about what’s achievable based on your hair texture and density. For example, if you have super curly hair you’ll likely find it taxing to recreate a slicked back sleek style on a daily basis at home.
Get what you ask for – Wherever possible, bring a picture of the style you’re wanting your stylist to achieve. A lot can get lost or miscommunicated with words alone but an image says it all. Pinterest, google and Instagram are great places to look for hair references.
Pick the products and tools – It’s all well and good walking out of the salon looking sharp but for maximum effect you should set yourself up to be able to maintain the look at home: salon quality shampoo and conditioner are a must, plus one styling product (add hairspray if you need) and a comb or a brush if required for your style.
